On January 17, 2001 President Clinton established the Virgin Islands Coral Reef National Monument. The monument consists of 12.708 submerged acres off of Saint John, including Hurricane Hole. The purpose of the monument is to provide greater protection to the sensitive coral reefs, and as a result there is no fishing or anchoring allowed.
